Paul calls the entire church to become alive in Christ, and that transformation should be evident in every area of our lives—especially in our parenting and work relationships. When we submit to one another out of reverence for Christ, we discover three counter-cultural truths:

Obedience Gets a New Foundation – Children are called to obey not simply “because I said so,” but because they belong to God. This shifts obedience from mere behavioral modification to deep spiritual formation, cultivating a teachable heart that listens to understand.

Authority Gets a New Accountability – Fathers are called to parent without provoking their children to anger, bringing them up with the discipline and instruction that comes from the Lord. In God’s kingdom, authority is never blanket authority—it’s always wrapped in accountability.

Christ Makes Everyone Equal at the Top – Whether slave or free, employee or employer, we all serve the same Master in heaven who shows no favoritism. We’re called to work as unto the Lord, remembering that God rewards each of us for the good we do.

This is what it means to be a church alive in Christ—letting the Holy Spirit renew our thoughts and attitudes, transforming us from the inside out, so that we live counter-culturally in every relationship.

What if I told you that the secret to thriving marriages, healthy parenting, and fulfilling work relationships isn’t found in the latest self-help book, but in a 2,000-year-old letter written to a church in Ephesus? Paul’s message to the Ephesian believers is as counter-cultural today as it was then: when Christ is Lord of our homes and workplaces, everything changes.

The Foundation That Changes Everything

Here’s the thing about being a follower of Jesus—it’s not just about accepting Him as Savior. It’s about surrendering to Him as Lord of every area of your life. When Paul addresses children and parents in Ephesians 6, he flips the script on typical family dynamics. If your coworkers were asked, would they know you’re a Christian based on your attitude and work ethic? That’s the standard we’re called to.

Everyone’s Equal at the Top

Perhaps the most revolutionary part of Paul’s message is this: in God’s kingdom, we’re all equal. Masters and slaves, employers and employees, parents and children—we all have the same Master in heaven, and He has no favorites. We all bear God’s image. We all need the same Savior. We all stand on level ground at the foot of the cross.

If you’re in a position of power, this should radically change how you treat people. You don’t get to lord your authority over others. Instead, you’re called to treat everyone as equals, as image-bearers of God, as people for whom Christ died.
