Ever feel like church is something you attend rather than something you *are*? What if I told you that Jesus gave you a specific gift designed to equip you, unify you with other believers, and help you mature into His likeness?
In Ephesians 4, Paul reveals that Christ gave the church five essential gifts: apostles, prophets, evangelists, shepherds, and teachers. These aren’t just titles for church leaders—they’re roles every believer is called to grow into. Today, let’s explore the first one: the apostolic gift, and what it means to be a “sent one.”
## What Does It Mean to Be Apostolic?
The word “apostle” simply means “one who is sent out.” Jesus was the ultimate apostle—sent by the Father to bring salvation to the world. And in Matthew 28, He extends that same calling to us: “Go and make disciples of all nations.”
Here’s the beautiful truth: you don’t need a seminary degree or a missionary visa to live apostolically. You’re already sent. Sent to your family. Sent to your workplace. Sent to your neighborhood. The question isn’t whether you’re called—it’s whether you’ll answer.
Throughout Scripture, we see apostles like Paul planting churches and reaching the lost, while Peter strengthened believers within the Jewish community. Both models matter. Some of us are called to reach outward to those who don’t know Jesus. Others are called to guard the theological integrity and mission of the church from within. Either way, the apostolic voice keeps us from becoming comfortable, inward-focused communities that forget our primary mission: making disciples.
## Why Every Church Needs Apostolic Voices
Many churches today emphasize teaching and shepherding—and those are vital. But when we silence the apostolic voice, something dangerous happens: we lose our mission. Churches become social clubs rather than disciple-making movements. We grow older, smaller, and eventually fade away.
The apostolic gift keeps us on task. It reminds us that we’re not here to simply consume good sermons and enjoy fellowship. We’re here to be equipped, unified, and sent out to transform lives with the Gospel. When all five gifts—apostles, prophets, evangelists, shepherds, and teachers—work together, the church becomes healthy, mature, and full of love.
## Living Out Your Apostolic Calling
So how do you embrace this gift? Start by asking yourself three questions:
**Where has God sent me?** Identify the specific people and places God has positioned you. Your mission field might be your cubicle, your gym, or your child’s soccer team.
**Am I growing into this calling?** Spiritual growth requires intentionality. Are you learning to share your faith naturally? Are you praying for opportunities to point people to Jesus?
**Am I willing to obey?** This is the heart of discipleship. Jesus didn’t suggest we make disciples—He commanded it. Obedience isn’t always comfortable, but it’s always fruitful.
