Ever feel like you’re doing everything right, but life keeps throwing curveballs? You’re praying, serving, making good choices—and then suddenly, everything falls apart. If that’s you today, Joseph’s story has something powerful to say.
From the Pit to the Palace: Joseph’s Unlikely Journey
Joseph had every reason to give up. Betrayed by his own brothers, sold into slavery, falsely accused, and thrown into prison—all while trying to honor God. Talk about a rough season. But here’s what makes Joseph’s story so compelling: through every devastating turn, Scripture repeats one phrase like a drumbeat: “The Lord was with Joseph.”
When he landed in Potiphar’s house as a slave, God was there. When he fled from temptation and got punished for doing the right thing, God was still there. Even in the darkness of an Egyptian prison, God’s presence never left him. Joseph didn’t just survive these trials—he thrived in them, eventually becoming second-in-command of the entire nation.
The question isn’t whether God shows up in our hardest moments. He does. The question is: will we trust Him when we can’t see the full picture?
When Doing Right Feels Wrong
Let’s be honest—Joseph’s story challenges our “prosperity gospel” thinking. We want to believe that obedience equals smooth sailing, that faithfulness guarantees immediate rewards. But Joseph ran from sexual temptation (the right move!) and ended up in prison. He honored his master, honored God, and still got accused of the very thing he refused to do.
Sometimes, doing the right thing leads to painful consequences. That’s not a sign God has abandoned you—it’s often the setup for something greater than you can imagine. Joseph couldn’t see it in the moment, but his prison sentence was actually his pathway to the palace. His faithfulness in the small, hidden places prepared him for influence on a national scale.
Three Truths to Hold Onto
The Lord is always with you. No matter how dark your circumstances, God hasn’t left the building. Joseph prospered as a slave because God was present. He gained favor in prison because God was present. Your situation may not change overnight, but His presence changes everything.
Bad things can happen when you do the right thing. This isn’t pessimism—it’s reality. Living with integrity doesn’t guarantee a problem-free life. But it does position you for God’s purposes, even when you can’t see them yet.
Faithfulness equals God’s favor. Joseph stayed faithful through years of injustice, and God elevated him at exactly the right time. Your obedience isn’t wasted. Every prayer, every right choice, every moment of trust is building something eternal.
Your Story Isn’t Over
Maybe you’re in your own “prison season” right now. You lost the job. The relationship ended. The dream died. You’re wondering if God even sees you. Here’s what Joseph would tell you: *I’m still here.* And more importantly, *God is still here.*
Years after his brothers betrayed him, Joseph told them: “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good.” What looks like a setback in your story might be God’s setup for your breakthrough. Don’t quit in the middle of the chapter.
Take Action: This week, identify one area where you’re tempted to give up. Instead of walking away, ask God to help you stay faithful right where you are. Write down one way you’ve seen His presence, even in difficulty, and thank Him for it.

**Prayer: Father, when life doesn’t make sense and doing right feels wrong, help us trust You anyway. Remind us that You’re always present, always working, always faithful—even when we can’t see it. Give us Joseph’s endurance to stay faithful in the hidden places, knowing You’re preparing us for something greater. In Jesus’ name, amen.*
